Physical Description
The head of the Dutch Warmblood is now almost exactly like that of the Thoroughbred. While good riding conformation is the prime criteria in the breeding of the Dutch Warmblood, tractability and intelligence are also sought after qualities. This breed now shows the difference in the riding horse and the more common light draft horse. The Gerlander, though a carriage type, was always noted for its good shoulder and front, a feature that is noticeable in the Dutch Warmblood. The long carriage-horse back and draft quarters of the Dutch breeds has been shortened and strengthened by Thoroughbred influence, to benefit the breed. Dutch breeders have succeeded in producing a horse with good sound limbs and hooves, and one with bone and substance. The average height is around 16 hands high or above and any color is acceptable. |
